The home theater receiver or we all know as an AV receiver or surround sound receiver, is the main component of a home theater system and provides the whole system itself. It provides you all inputs and outputs and everything, including your TV. A home theater receiver provides an easy and cheaper method of centralizing of your home theater system. It also supports the access between of two components in the whole home theater system.

A home theater receiver combines the functions of these three following components: a tuner, a preamp to control the audio and an amplifier that send the signal to the speakers. Beside that, there are some components to measure the quality of the home theater receiver as one integrated audio video system.

Power (WPC)
One receiver has 50 watts per channel (WPC), another one has 75 and has continued to 100th. Many people think that more watts mean more volume. An amplifier with 100 WPC is twice as loud as 50 WPC, right?  Not really. But, I will not explain about this now, perhaps in the next article.

The next component is Decibels (dB)
Decibels (dB) is used to measure noise or sound. Human ears detect transformation in the band in a non-linear. A database is a logarithmic scale of loudness. A difference of 1 dB is the minimum perceptible change in volume, 3 db is a moderate change, and 10 dB is a doubling of the volume. For a recipient twice as loud as another, you need 10-times more power. A home theater receiver with 100 WPC is capable of twice the volume of a 10 WPC amp.

Another factor shows the quality of home theater receiver is signal to noise ratio (S/N), the acoustic signal to background noise. The higher ratio, the more desired sound that is separated from the acoustic effects and background sounds.

Another factor affecting the quality of home theater receiver is the ability to create the output of its full power continuously. In other words, just because your receiver or amplifier can be considered as the ability to issue 100WPC,  it does not mean can be for a long time.

Definition of Dynamic Headroom
The Bottom Line – Take all the factors to consider when buying a home theater receiver. Do not purchase a receiver without of those specifications, such as one watt per channel rating. A single specification is taken out of context with other factors, not an accurate picture of the recipient’s true abilities. There are other factors such as sound quality, ease of use and flexibility combined with other components. Do not buy a home theater receiver without even listening it before.

Definition of continuous power (RMS)
This factor is showing the ability of the recipient of the home theater receiver at a significantly higher level for a short period of musical peaks or extreme effects in movies. This specification is important for home theater receiver, where extreme changes in the band during the movie.
